Press a button and the terrace is in shade; when the wind picks up, the fabric tucks itself into the aluminium housing, protected from rain and dust.

Cassette (Dakar, Casablanca) hides the fabric and arms in an enclosed box — maximum protection and service life. Semi-cassette (Palladio, Corsica) covers the fabric and the mechanism from above and in front, leaving the arms outside. Open (Australia, Jamaica) is the most affordable; Jamaica adds a protective hood, and under a canopy both serve you perfectly well.

No: a retractable awning is fixed to the wall or ceiling and takes up no space on the terrace. That is the main difference from a pergola — you get the shade without posts or foundations.
The fabric is acrylic with a water-repellent finish, in 150 designs. Motorised models can have wind and sun sensors: the awning extends by itself in the heat and retracts by itself in gusts. In heavy downpours and storms the awning should be retracted.
